BART a Little, Save a Lot

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is an incredible public transit system that connects the San Francisco Peninsula with communities in the East Bay and South Bay. With more than 131 miles of track and 150 stations carrying approximately 405,000 trips (on an average weekday) across 5 counties, BART is an easy and economical way to travel throughout the Bay Area. Access to this transit resource is one of the benefits of living in one of our Hayward communities. Whether you’re using it for your commute or a car-less night out, BART is an excellent resource to help you save time and money! Here are 3 key ways utilizing BART can help you save big.

1. Access to Better Housing Prices

When it comes to the cost of living, homes in San Francisco are 73.9% more expensive than Hayward homes, according to a 2022 report from BestHomes.com. So if you work in San Francisco, living in Hayward and using BART for your commute can help you save a lot. This also means that the opportunity for homeownership that may have seemed impossible in other (less affordable) neighborhoods is now a very exciting option! Of course, there’s also the added benefit of saving even more money by purchasing a new home rather than a “fixer-upper “.

Also, according to a 2015 BART commute report, utilizing BART “significantly increases the size of the labor pool that can access downtown San Francisco”, making it possible for “an additional 193,000 workers to access downtown within a 60-minute commute.” For SF employers that also means that the labor pool is expanded by 11%.

2. Cost-Effective Commute

When it comes to the most time and cost-effective commute, BART is the best way to go! With today’s high gas prices, rising bridge tolls, and unpredictable traffic jams, commuting in the Bay Area can feel overwhelming. According to BART’s Green Factsheet, one commuter using BART every weekday can save more than 300 gallons of gas in a year. This is equivalent to saving 5,987 pounds of CO2, not to mention saving nearly $2,000 a year in gas at the current rates!

BART also offers a Bay Area Commuter Benefits Program, which requires employers with 50+ employees to register and offer commuter benefits to their employees.

And those are just the dollars saved by commuting with BART. Utilizing public transit also means the possibility of being able to use your commute for other activities such as reading a book or magazine, learning another language (Duolingo, anyone?!), or planning your next vacation!

3. Improved Health and Well-Being

In addition to saving time and money, commuting with BART also helps to facilitate improved community health and well-being. Since riders must walk from their front doors or cars to their nearest station, this increases daily physical activity. In fact, it’s possible for people to achieve the recommended 30 minutes of daily physical activity on their commute alone!

Also, alleviating a stressful, traffic-laden commute can help reduce stress in your daily work life, thus helping to enable a better work-life balance.
